Hurricane Ian
Hey Guys!
I know it’s been a hot minute since I’ve posted. When I started this page I had no idea how consistent I’d be but here we are! So much has happened in the last month, my head could spin! M (age 5) has taken an interest in baking so we both made our first cake from scratch, we have started homeschooling, my husband and I celebrated our wedding anniversary, we all celebrated my dad’s birthday, and finally we fled Hurricane Ian.
I want to start by saying I am extremely fortunate to be posting this from the comfort of my home that did not lose power. The devastation caused by this storm was predicted to destroy the area of Florida we live in and at the very last minute the storm took a turn and made landfall further south as a Category 4 hurricane in Fort Myers. While I’m grateful my house is still standing and has power, my heart has been aching for those who lost everything to this storm. We took no chances staying behind and Monday we packed up some clothes and headed north.
Monday night we arrived in Savannah, GA. We stayed in an AirBnb until Wednesday when we started to hear the storm was going to swing back around and hit the south east coast of the US. I mean seriously, this thing was just following us. We left Savannah and headed to a little place outside of Tallahassee, FL. We got one of the very last hotel rooms and stayed there for one night. The next day, we found out our house was still in working order and we decided to drive home.
The drive home was eerie. The roads were pretty much empty except for all of the relief trucks headed south or to the Orlando area which received almost 20 INCHES of rain. Men and women with supplies, tree cutting services, fire trucks, medical trucks, and disaster relief trucks. Traffic lights were down. Trees down everywhere. People outside trying to assess the damages done to their property.
This last week has been an absolute whirlwind. Most of it full of worry and the inability to comprehend the destruction that was to come with this storm. As I sit here this morning out on the patio while the boys play and my daughter catches up on her missed sleep in the coziness of her own crib, I am so thankful for our safety and that our home was able to withstand the storm. We have not ventured downtown or around the city to see what damage has been done. I, like many others, are just trying to get a hold of everything that happened this last week.
Thanks for hanging in there with me! I’ll be back soon :)
